Holy Land Day 2 - Galilee

Today I am feeling more jet-lagged than yesterday, which I guess makes sense, so today’s post is going to be a little more picture-based.

We started out this morning by driving up to Tel Dan, which is basically a nature park with a few archaeological things scattered throughout. To be honest, I think we would have been better off going to Caesarea Philippi instead. We basically just walked on the trail and the guide pointed out a few trees though, and it also started to rain while we were there (the tour actually provides umbrellas, which is really nice). Since it was still raining, we next went down to a small museum that has as its main (only) exhibit a boat from the time of Jesus that was unearthed from the Sea of Galilee in 1986.

One of the ladies in our group thought we looked cute
talking under the umbrella and took our picture (Tel Dan)

Then we had the traditional Galilee meal of whole fish (served with head and scales). It wasn’t the same restaurant I went to before, so I guess it’s kind of a gimmick thing that several restaurants in the area probably do. They had excellent pita and even some pretty tasty fries, but the highlight was getting our fellow tour-goers to kiss the fish!

BYU days

In the afternoon we took a boat ride out on the Sea of Galilee, and then went to the Church of the Beatitudes on the traditional site of the Sermon on the Mount. We finished up at Capernaum, which is where most of the recorded miracles took place. They have there sites that represent the house of Peter and the synagogue Jesus would have attended. Our guide spent a lot of time with us in the scriptures and had some nice insights, but none that really stuck out (did I mention I was more jet-lagged today? also much colder and wetter, so that didn’t help either).

Hopefully today will be our last day of rain for the trip. I told everyone I’m a good luck charm, because we always had perfect weather for our field trips on my study abroad and the weather today was still better than projected. Some people accused me of jinxing it or of my luck running out when it rained today, but from the way our tour guide announced it, I don’t think the boat museum is a regular stop, and we only went there because of the rain, so was it really unlucky? I am hoping it’ll still warm up a little though…
